About Ian Scheckter

Ian Scheckter, a South African driver born in 1947, competed in Formula 1 between 1974 and 1977, accumulating eighteen Grand Prix starts across four consecutive seasons. His career took in drives with several notable constructors, including Team Lotus, Tyrrell, March and Williams.

He made his debut in 1974 with Team Lotus at the age of twenty-six, then spent the following two seasons appearing in Tyrrell machinery. For 1977, his final and busiest year in the championship, he switched to March.

Despite racing for four different teams over his four-year spell, Scheckter never managed to break into the points. Eighteen starts without a championship point reflects a career spent largely in uncompetitive circumstances, and he was never classified in the final drivers' standings. His time in Formula 1 ended after the 1977 season, closing a career that spanned the breadth of the mid-1970s grid without ever quite delivering a tangible result.
