About Innes Ireland

Innes Ireland, a British driver born in 1930, competed in Formula 1 from 1959 to 1966, starting fifty-five Grands Prix over eight consecutive seasons. He scored one victory, four podium finishes and forty-seven championship points in a career spent with Team Lotus, Lotus-Climax, Lotus-BRM, BRP and BRM.

Ireland made his debut with Team Lotus in 1959 at the age of twenty-eight and quickly established himself, finishing fourteenth in the standings in his first year before a breakthrough 1960 season in which he took eighteen points and fourth place in the championship, his best-ever final position.

His sole Grand Prix win came in 1961, a season in which he finished sixth in the standings with twelve points in Lotus-Climax machinery. It proved the high-water mark of his career; from 1962 he continued with Lotus-Climax and then Lotus-BRM equipment, scoring more modestly, with ninth in the 1963 championship his best return of that period.

The final years brought diminishing rewards. He went without points in 1965, his last season in Lotus-BRM machinery, and again in 1966 after a move to BRM, after which his Formula 1 career came to a close. With a win, four podiums and a top-four championship finish to his name, Ireland ranks among the more accomplished British drivers of Formula 1's first two decades.
