About Manfred Winkelhock

Manfred Winkelhock, a German driver born in 1951, made 49 World Championship starts in the first half of the 1980s, spending almost his entire career with small teams at the unglamorous end of the grid.

Three of his four seasons, from 1982 to 1984, were spent with ATS. His debut year proved the most productive: two points in 1982, good for twenty-fourth in the championship, which turned out to be the only points of his career. He also appeared with Brabham during his time in Formula 1.

For 1985 he moved to RAM, another struggling outfit, and again went unrewarded. Across four seasons Winkelhock never had machinery capable of running regularly in the points, and his final tally of two points from 49 starts says more about the cars he drove than the effort expended in them.
