ATS

The ATS name appears twice in Formula 1 history, but the team best associated with it was the German operation backed by wheel manufacturer Günther Schmid, which competed from the late 1970s into the mid-1980s.

A determined but volatile back-of-grid privateer, ATS struggled for competitiveness and was known almost as much for the turbulent management style of its owner as for its on-track results. It scored only a handful of points across its existence despite running competent drivers.

The team folded in the mid-1980s, another of the small independents squeezed out as Formula 1 grew more expensive and professional.

ATS was a characteristic struggling privateer of its time, memorable for its turbulence as much as its racing. It represents the many small, ambitious teams that filled the grids of late-1970s and 1980s Formula 1 before the economics of the sport forced them out.
