About Johnny Thomson

Johnny Thomson, an American driver born in 1922, made nine World Championship starts between 1953 and 1960. His appearances came at the Indianapolis 500, which counted toward the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960, and he drove chassis from a string of American builders including Kurtis Kraft, Nichels, Kuzma and Lesovsky.

Thomson first scored in 1955 with a Kuzma, taking three points for sixteenth in the standings. His best season came in 1959 in a Lesovsky, when a podium finish brought five points and twelfth place in the championship; he also claimed a pole position during his career, and added two further points in 1960.

Across eight seasons of participation he totalled ten points, one podium and one pole, making him one of the more consistently competitive American oval racers to feature in the World Championship's Indianapolis years.
