About Baku City Circuit
The Baku City Circuit threads through the streets of Azerbaijan's seaside capital, running along the Caspian shoreline and up through the medieval Old City. Designed by Hermann Tilke, it first hosted a race in 2016 as the European Grand Prix before becoming the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 2017, and it has rapidly built a reputation as one of the most unpredictable events on the calendar.
Baku's blend of an exceptionally long flat-out straight and a tight, walled castle section makes it a circuit of extremes, frequently producing safety cars, dramatic crashes and surprise results. Nico Rosberg won the inaugural 2016 race, and subsequent winners have included Daniel Ricciardo, Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri, reflecting just how often the race throws up unexpected outcomes.
Memorable Moments
- 2017: A chaotic race featured Sebastian Vettel deliberately banging wheels with Lewis Hamilton behind the safety car; both faded, and Daniel Ricciardo swept through to win for Red Bull.
- 2018: Late drama struck as the Red Bulls of Ricciardo and Verstappen collided and a Bottas puncture handed Lewis Hamilton a fortunate victory.
- 2021: Max Verstappen suffered a high-speed tyre failure while leading; at the restart Hamilton ran off at Turn 1, and Sergio Perez took a popular win for Red Bull.
- 2023: Sergio Perez mastered the Baku streets again, beating team-mate Verstappen in a sprint-and-Grand-Prix double weekend.
Track Character
Baku is a circuit of contrasts: a roughly two-kilometre run along the seafront, one of the longest flat-out stretches in F1, leads into a heavy braking zone that is the prime overtaking spot and a magnet for slipstreaming battles. By contrast the twisting climb past the eighth-century castle walls narrows to barely a car's width, leaving zero margin for error. Teams must compromise between straight-line speed and downforce, and the combination of long straights, unforgiving walls and frequent safety cars makes Baku one of the most chaotic and entertaining races of the year.
