Elio de Angelis

Elio de Angelis was an Italian racing driver admired both for his refined speed and for his cultured, gentlemanly demeanour, including a talent for the piano that set him apart in the paddock. Born in Rome in 1958 to a wealthy family, he rose quickly through the junior categories and reached Formula 1 in 1979 with Shadow, before joining Team Lotus, where he spent the most productive years of his career.

He scored 2 wins, 9 podiums, 3 pole positions and 122 points across 109 starts. Both of his victories came with Lotus: a famously narrow win over Keke Rosberg at the 1982 Austrian Grand Prix, and the 1985 San Marino Grand Prix. He was a consistent points-scorer and team leader at Lotus, though the arrival of Ayrton Senna as his team-mate from 1985 shifted the team's focus and prompted his move to Brabham for 1986.

On 14 May 1986, during a private test at the Paul Ricard circuit, de Angelis crashed when his Brabham suffered a rear-wing failure. He survived the impact but died from his injuries, a tragedy that intensified calls for improved safety provision at test sessions.

De Angelis was a smooth, intelligent driver whose elegance behind the wheel mirrored his cultured personality away from it. Respected throughout the paddock for his sportsmanship, he held his own as Lotus team leader before the emergence of Senna. His death in a testing accident at Paul Ricard, with limited marshalling and medical cover present, became a catalyst for stricter safety standards at private tests, ensuring his loss helped shape a safer era for the drivers who followed.
