Jim Clark

Jim Clark is widely regarded as one of the greatest racing drivers who ever lived, a Scottish farmer of sublime natural ability whose dominance in the 1960s set standards that defined an era. Born in Kilmany in 1936, he combined effortless speed with extraordinary versatility, and his bond with Lotus and its founder Colin Chapman produced some of the most commanding performances in Formula 1 history.

Clark won the World Championship twice, in 1963 and 1965, both with Team Lotus. His 1963 campaign was utterly dominant, and in 1965 he added the Indianapolis 500 to his F1 crown in the same year, an astonishing feat of breadth. He recorded 25 Grand Prix wins, 32 podiums and 34 pole positions in just 73 starts, achieving a win rate and pole rate among the highest the sport has ever seen.

His career and life were cut short when he was killed in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim in April 1968, a loss that stunned the racing world. He is remembered as the benchmark of pure driving talent against whom later greats are still measured.

Clark drove with a smoothness and economy of movement that made the impossible look serene, rarely sliding the car and seemingly always in perfect harmony with the machine. His versatility was unmatched, winning in Formula 1, Indianapolis, sports cars and touring cars with equal grace.
