Mike Spence

Mike Spence, a British driver born in 1936, competed in Formula 1 from 1963 to 1968, making thirty-six World Championship starts across six consecutive seasons. He debuted at twenty-six with Lotus-Climax and scored his first championship points in 1964.

His strongest year came in 1965, when he took ten points for Lotus and finished eighth in the drivers' championship. During his career he also claimed a podium finish and a pole position, and his season-by-season record shows a driver who scored points in four consecutive years from 1964 to 1967.

After three seasons with Lotus-Climax he drove Lotus-BRM machinery in 1966 before joining the BRM works team, for whom he scored nine points in 1967, and he began the 1968 season still with BRM.

Spence's career total of twenty-seven points, gathered under a scoring system that paid only the top six finishers, reflects a consistently competitive driver who spent his entire Formula 1 career with front-rank British teams.
