About Sam Tingle

Sam Tingle, a Rhodesian driver born in 1921, made six Formula 1 World Championship starts spread across eight years, from 1962 to 1969. His career was conducted entirely in occasional appearances rather than full seasons, with entries in 1962, 1963, 1965 and then annually from 1967 to 1969.

He debuted in a Lotus-Climax at the age of forty, then became closely associated with the LDS marque, racing LDS chassis powered at different times by Alfa Romeo and Climax engines across four of his six starts. His final appearance came in 1969 at the wheel of a Brabham-Repco.

None of his starts produced championship points, a reflection of the privateer machinery he campaigned. Tingle was among the small group of drivers from southern Africa who made sporadic World Championship appearances during the 1960s, typically at races within reach of home.
