About Yas Marina Circuit
Yas Marina Circuit, on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, joined the Formula 1 calendar in 2009 and has hosted the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ever since. Lavishly funded and meticulously presented, it has become the championship's traditional season finale, a glamorous closing chapter set against a marina, a striking LED-lit hotel that arches over the track, and the desert skyline.
Its signature feature is the day-to-night format: the race begins in the late-afternoon sun and finishes under floodlights, a visual spectacle that suits the venue's showcase ambitions. As the final round of the year, it has repeatedly carried enormous championship significance, becoming the stage on which several title fights have been decided.
The circuit was extensively modified for 2021 to improve overtaking, with several corners reprofiled and a long curve added to encourage closer racing. Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton dominated its early years, and more recently Max Verstappen has been the man to beat, but it is the season's stakes rather than any one winner that define the place.
Memorable Moments
- 2009: Sebastian Vettel won the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, christening the new day-to-night showpiece in Red Bull's colours.
- 2010: A four-way title decider swung Vettel's way when Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber were stuck behind Vitaly Petrov, handing the young German his first World Championship in dramatic fashion.
- 2016: Lewis Hamilton won the race but lost the title to Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, having deliberately backed the field up in a vain attempt to disrupt his rival's championship.
- 2021: One of the most controversial finishes in F1 history saw Max Verstappen pass Lewis Hamilton on the final lap, after a contentious late safety-car restart, to snatch his first World Championship.
Track Character
Yas Marina mixes long straights with a series of tight, low-speed corners, and historically had a reputation for processional racing that prompted the 2021 redesign to open it up for overtaking. The reprofiled layout, with its longer sweeping sections and heavy braking zones at the end of the straights, has made passing more feasible, particularly with DRS. The unique day-to-night transition shifts grip and track temperature through the race, adding a strategic and tyre-management dimension, while the marina, the hotel arching over the circuit and the floodlit desert backdrop give the finale a spectacle few venues can match.
