Martin Brundle

Martin Brundle, born on 1 June 1959 in King's Lynn, England, was a respected Formula 1 driver who became, after his racing career, one of the most recognisable and authoritative voices in motorsport broadcasting. He came to prominence in 1983 in a celebrated British Formula 3 title fight against Ayrton Senna, before stepping up to F1 with Tyrrell in 1984.

Over a career spanning from 1984 to 1996, Brundle raced for a string of teams including Tyrrell, Zakspeed, Brabham, Benetton, Ligier, McLaren and Jordan. He recorded nine podium finishes and 98 points across 158 starts, with his strongest season coming in 1992 at Benetton, where he was a frequent podium contender alongside a young Michael Schumacher. A grand prix victory narrowly eluded him throughout his time in the sport.

Away from F1, Brundle was a genuine sports car star, winning the World Sportscar Championship in 1988 and claiming overall victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1990 with Jaguar. After retiring from racing he moved into commentary, forming acclaimed partnerships first at ITV and then Sky Sports F1, where his expert analysis and famous pre-race "gridwalk" interviews made him a beloved fixture of the broadcast for decades.

Brundle was a versatile and intelligent racer, quick and adaptable across single-seaters and sports cars alike, who frequently outperformed the machinery he was given. Yet his greatest and most enduring legacy lies in broadcasting, where his deep understanding of the sport, honest insight and warm, witty delivery, especially during his unmissable gridwalk, made him one of the most respected and cherished voices in Formula 1 for a generation of fans.
