About Richie Ginther

Richie Ginther, an American driver born in 1930, was a fixture of the Formula 1 field from 1960 to 1966, making fifty-three starts over seven consecutive seasons. His career took in Ferrari, BRM, Honda and Cooper-Maserati, and produced one victory, fourteen podium finishes and 107 championship points.

He began with two seasons at Ferrari, finishing ninth in the 1960 championship and fifth in 1961 with sixteen points. A move to BRM followed, and his three years there marked the peak of his career: after eighth in 1962, he finished third in the 1963 World Championship with twenty-nine points, then fifth again in 1964.

For 1965 Ginther joined Honda, and it was with the Japanese manufacturer that he took his sole Grand Prix victory — the standout result of a season that brought eleven points and seventh in the standings. His final campaign, with Cooper-Maserati in 1966, added five more points.

Fourteen podiums from fifty-three starts made Ginther one of the most consistent front-runners of his generation never to win more than once. He scored points in every one of his seven seasons, for four different constructors — a record of reliability few contemporaries matched.
