About Sam Hanks

Sam Hanks, an American driver born in 1914, is credited with nine World Championship starts between 1950 and 1957, all of which came at the Indianapolis 500, which counted toward the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960.

Driving Kurtis Kraft machinery for most of that span, Hanks first scored in 1952 with four points, added two more in 1953, and took six points in 1956 for seventh place in the championship, his best finish to that point.

His final appearance, in 1957 at the wheel of an Epperly, brought his greatest success: victory, worth eight points and eighth in the final standings. With one win and four podiums from nine starts, Hanks retired from championship competition with an eleven percent win rate, ending his career on the highest possible note.
