About Jonathan Palmer

Jonathan Palmer, a British driver born in 1956, competed in Formula 1 from 1983 to 1989, amassing 84 starts and 14 championship points across spells with four teams.

He made his debut with Williams in 1983 before spending 1984 with RAM and then two seasons, 1985 and 1986, with the German Zakspeed operation. Points were beyond reach in those years with the sport's smaller outfits, and he went unclassified in the championship four seasons running.

His fortunes changed with a move to Tyrrell in 1987, where he scored seven points to finish eleventh in the World Championship — his best final position. He stayed with the team through 1988, adding five points, and closed his career in 1989 with a further two.

Palmer's seven seasons traced a familiar arc for drivers of the turbo era: years of persistence in uncompetitive machinery followed by a productive spell once a more established seat came his way. All 14 of his career points were scored in Tyrrell colours.
