Derek Warwick

Derek Warwick was a British driver born in 1954 who competed in Formula 1 from 1981 to 1993, amassing 148 World Championship starts across eleven seasons and six teams. He began with Toleman, spending three years with the young team and scoring his first points in 1983, when nine points brought him fourteenth in the championship.

A move to Renault for 1984 produced the strongest season of his career: 23 points and seventh place in the World Championship. He stayed with the French manufacturer for 1985 before a pointless year at Brabham in 1986. From 1987 to 1989 he settled at Arrows, where 1988 stood out — seventeen points and eighth in the standings, his second-best championship finish.

Warwick joined Team Lotus for 1990, then stepped away from Formula 1 for two seasons before returning with Footwork in 1993 for a final campaign that yielded four points. Across thirteen years he took four podium finishes and 71 points, though a race victory always eluded him.

His career is notable for its persistence and breadth: few drivers of his generation raced for so many different teams over so long a span, and his 148 starts place him firmly among the more experienced British drivers of the 1980s.
