About Giancarlo Baghetti

Giancarlo Baghetti, an Italian driver born in 1934, competed in Formula 1 from 1961 to 1967, making 26 starts and winning one Grand Prix. His victory came in his debut season of 1961 with Ferrari, a year in which he scored nine points and finished ninth in the championship, comfortably the best campaign of his career.

He remained with Ferrari for 1962, adding five points for eleventh in the standings, but never scored again thereafter. From 1963 his career moved through a succession of teams: the ATS venture in 1963, BRM in 1964, a Brabham-Climax in 1965, a return to Ferrari in 1966, and a final appearance in a Lotus-Ford in 1967.

The contrast between his first two seasons and the rest of his career is stark. All fourteen of his points, his win, and his podium came in 1961 and 1962; the five seasons that followed, across five different teams, added nothing to his tally.

A race winner with a 3.8 per cent career win rate, Baghetti remains a distinctive figure in the records: a driver whose Formula 1 achievements were concentrated almost entirely at the very start of his time in the championship.
