About Stefan Johansson

Stefan Johansson, a Swedish driver born in 1956, competed in Formula 1 between 1983 and 1991, amassing seventy-nine Grand Prix starts, twelve podium finishes and eighty-eight championship points. Remarkably, despite driving for front-running teams, he never took a win, a pole position or a fastest lap.

His career began modestly with the small Spirit operation in 1983 before a move to Tyrrell, where he scored his first points in 1984 and finished seventh in the 1985 championship with twenty-six points. That form earned him a seat at Ferrari for 1986, where he took twenty-three points and fifth in the standings, his best championship finish.

In 1987 Johansson joined McLaren and enjoyed his most productive single season, scoring thirty points on his way to sixth in the championship. The peak years of 1985 to 1987 account for the bulk of his podium tally and established him as a consistent front-of-midfield presence.

The later stages of his career were spent with progressively smaller teams: a pointless year at Ligier in 1988, a spell with the new Onyx outfit in 1989 that still yielded six points and twelfth in the standings, and a final appearance with AGS in 1991. Across nine seasons and eight teams, his twelve podiums without a victory remain one of the more distinctive statistical lines of his era.
