Surtees

The Surtees Racing Organisation was founded by John Surtees, the only man ever to win World Championships on both two and four wheels. After his motorcycle titles and his 1964 Formula 1 crown with Ferrari, Surtees set up his own constructor in 1970.

The team raced through the 1970s as an independent, scoring podium finishes and giving track time to a range of drivers, though it never managed to win a Grand Prix. Surtees built his own cars and ran them with the same total commitment that had defined his driving career.

Rising costs and the difficulty of competing against better-funded rivals eventually forced the team's closure at the end of the decade.

Surtees the team carried the uncompromising spirit of its remarkable founder. While it never matched John Surtees's own success as a driver, its place in the sport is secured by the unique standing of the only dual world champion, who poured his expertise into building racing cars of his own.
