The 1973 Season
Jackie Stewart claimed his third and final World Championship in 1973, a record at the time, before retiring at the peak of his powers. The triumph was overshadowed by tragedy when his Tyrrell teammate and protege Francois Cevert was killed in practice for the season-ending United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen.
Stewart withdrew from what would have been his 100th and final race in mourning. Lotus took the constructors' championship, but the year is remembered for Stewart's safety crusade and the devastating loss of one of the sport's brightest talents.
