About Luigi Villoresi

Luigi Villoresi, an Italian driver born in 1909, raced in the Formula 1 World Championship from its first season in 1950 through 1956, making thirty-five starts for Ferrari, Maserati and Lancia. Already forty at the championship's inception, he was one of the senior figures on the early grids.

The heart of his career was a four-year spell with Ferrari from 1950 to 1953. He finished fifth in the championship in 1951 with fifteen points, and equalled that fifth place in 1953 with seventeen points, his best seasons in the sport. In all he stood on the podium eight times and took one pole position, though a Grand Prix victory eluded him.

From 1954 his appearances continued with Maserati, then Lancia in 1955, and finally Maserati again in 1956, each of those late seasons bringing two points and twentieth in the standings.

Villoresi ended his championship career with forty-nine points and a record of consistent frontrunning in its early years: eight podiums without a win, and points scored in six of his seven seasons.
