About Shanghai International Circuit
The Shanghai International Circuit opened in 2004 to host China's first Formula 1 World Championship race, the Chinese Grand Prix. Designed by Hermann Tilke and built on reclaimed marshland at great expense, it was one of the most ambitious and lavish circuit projects of its era, with vast grandstands and a striking wing-shaped pit complex.
The track's signature feature is its unusual layout, said to be inspired by the Chinese character "shang," which produces the distinctive snail-shaped Turn 1-2-3 sequence that spirals tighter as it goes. It also boasts one of the longest straights in F1, leading into a heavy braking zone that has become a prime overtaking spot.
After hosting the race continuously through 2019, the Chinese Grand Prix paused for several years before returning in 2024, which also marked the venue's first Sprint weekend.
Memorable Moments
- 2006: Michael Schumacher took what would be his final Grand Prix victory here, winning in tricky mixed conditions during his last full season with Ferrari.
- 2007: Lewis Hamilton, on the brink of the title in his rookie year, slid into the gravel at the pit entry on worn tyres and beached his car, a costly retirement in the championship run-in.
- 2018: Daniel Ricciardo produced a string of bold late overtakes to win a thrilling race after a well-timed safety car shuffled the order.
- 2024: The Chinese Grand Prix returned after a five-year break and hosted its first Sprint, with Max Verstappen winning both the Sprint and the main race.
Track Character
Shanghai is a varied, technically demanding circuit anchored by two standout features. The opening complex winds through a long, ever-tightening right-hander that flows into a sharp left, testing a driver's patience and commitment on entry. At the other end of the lap, the enormously long back straight feeds into a tight hairpin, creating one of the best overtaking opportunities of the season and rewarding strong traction and braking stability. The mix of slow, medium and fast corners makes setup a balancing act, while the often cool, damp Shanghai conditions can leave teams struggling to bring tyres up to temperature, adding a further strategic dimension.
