Vanwall

Vanwall, funded by industrialist Tony Vandervell, was the team that finally gave Britain a Grand Prix winner capable of beating the dominant Italian marques. Vandervell's ambition was explicitly patriotic: to defeat what he called the 'red cars' of Ferrari and Maserati.

With a chassis influenced by Colin Chapman and aerodynamic bodywork by Frank Costin, and driven by Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks, Vanwall achieved its goal spectacularly. In 1958 the team won the inaugural International Cup for Manufacturers, the forerunner of the Constructors' Championship, becoming the first British team to do so.

Vandervell scaled back the operation after 1958 due to his failing health, and the team's front-line career was brief but historically decisive.

Vanwall proved that British engineering could beat the world, lighting the fuse for the explosion of British racing success that followed in the 1960s. Tony Vandervell's determination delivered a landmark first constructors' title and a permanent place in the story of how Britain came to dominate Formula 1.
