Roy Salvadori

Roy Salvadori was a British driver whose Formula 1 career ran from 1952 to 1962, encompassing fifty starts and an unusually wide spread of machinery — his record lists teams including Ferrari, Connaught, Maserati, BRM, Vanwall, Aston Martin, Cooper in several forms, and Lola. Born in 1922, he debuted at twenty-nine and spent his first five seasons without scoring, racing Ferrari, Connaught and Maserati equipment through the mid-1950s.

His first points came with BRM in 1957, but it was the 1958 season with Cooper that defined his championship record: fifteen points and fourth place in the drivers' standings, comfortably his best result and a strong showing at the moment the rear-engined Cooper revolution was gathering pace. Both of his career podium finishes fall within a record built around that peak.

The later years brought a return to leaner results — further Cooper-Maserati and Cooper-Climax campaigns, two more points in 1961, and a final season with Lola in 1962. Across eleven seasons he totalled nineteen points and two podiums.

Few drivers of the period sampled as many different constructors, and his decade-long presence through the front-engined era into the rear-engined one makes his career a cross-section of British racing in the 1950s.
