Johnny Claes

Johnny Claes, a Belgian driver born in 1916, competed in the World Championship from its inaugural season in 1950 through 1955, making 24 starts — a substantial total for the era, spread across teams including Talbot-Lago, Gordini, Connaught and Maserati.

He began with two seasons in Talbot-Lago machinery in 1950 and 1951, then moved through a succession of drives: Gordini in 1952, Connaught in 1953 and finally a Maserati in 1955.

Despite the volume of appearances, Claes never scored a championship point, a record consistent with the privateer and small-team equipment he generally raced in the early years of the World Championship, when the works Ferraris, Alfa Romeos and Maseratis monopolised the sharp end of the field.

Twenty-four starts across six seasons without a point nonetheless represent one of the more sustained privateer efforts of the championship's first decade.
