Connaught

Connaught was a British team from the first decade of the World Championship, part of the early wave of home constructors who sought to challenge the dominant Continental marques in the 1950s.

The team's place in history was secured at the 1955 Syracuse Grand Prix, a non-championship race, where the young Tony Brooks scored a famous victory that was the first by a British car in a Grand Prix since before the war, a milestone moment for the nascent British racing industry. In the World Championship the team scored points and showed flashes of promise.

Financial reality caught up with Connaught, and the team withdrew in the late 1950s, but it had played its part in the rise of British motorsport.

Connaught was one of the British pioneers whose efforts in the 1950s laid the foundations for the country's later dominance of Formula 1. Tony Brooks's Syracuse triumph in a Connaught was a symbolic turning point, an early sign that British engineering would come to rule the sport.
