About Eddie Cheever

Eddie Cheever was an American driver who competed in Formula 1 from 1978 to 1989, making 132 starts across a dozen years and a long list of teams. He was just 20 years old at his 1978 debut with Theodore.

After a pointless spell with Osella in 1980, Cheever's career gathered momentum: ten points with Tyrrell in 1981, fifteen with Ligier in 1982, and then his best season, 1983, when he scored 22 points for Renault and finished seventh in the drivers' championship.

Moves to Alfa Romeo for 1984 and 1985 and Lola in 1986 brought diminishing returns, but he found stability at Arrows, where he spent his final three seasons from 1987 to 1989, scoring points in each of them.

Cheever's career total of 70 points and nine podium finishes came without a victory or a pole position, yet the consistency of his points-scoring — across Tyrrell, Ligier, Renault, Alfa Romeo and Arrows — made him one of the most durable American presences in Formula 1 during the 1980s.
