About Bahrain International Circuit

The Bahrain International Circuit at Sakhir, carved out of the desert south of Manama, opened in 2004 as the first Formula 1 venue in the Middle East. Designed by Hermann Tilke, it broke new ground for the region and has been a fixture on the calendar ever since, often hosting the season-opening round in recent years.

Since 2014 the Bahrain Grand Prix has been run under floodlights as a night race, the desert setting and artificial lighting giving it a distinctive look. The inaugural 2004 race was won by Michael Schumacher for Ferrari, and the circuit has since produced victories for a long list of champions including Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. In 2020 the venue hosted two races in successive weekends, the second run on a shorter "outer" layout.

Memorable Moments

  • 2004: Michael Schumacher won the first ever Bahrain Grand Prix for Ferrari, marking Formula 1's debut in the Middle East.
  • 2014: The inaugural night race produced a classic, as Mercedes team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg fought wheel-to-wheel for the entire distance, Hamilton just edging it.
  • 2020: A horrifying first-lap fireball saw Romain Grosjean's car split and erupt in flames; the Frenchman climbed out and survived, a testament to the halo and modern safety.
  • 2025: Oscar Piastri controlled the race from pole to win for McLaren, underlining the team's strong early-season form.

Track Character

Bahrain is a stop-start circuit built around heavy braking zones, with several long straights feeding into tight corners that reward strong traction and good brake stability. The opening sequence and the run down to Turn 1 are prime overtaking spots, and with three DRS zones the layout regularly produces multiple passes and exciting racing. Cooling air at night helps engines and tyres, but the abrasive surface and desert sand still punish rear tyres over a stint. The floodlit desert backdrop gives the venue a dramatic, theatrical atmosphere that has made it a favourite to open the season.
