Graham Hill

Graham Hill was a two-time Formula 1 World Champion and the only driver in history to win motorsport's Triple Crown: the Formula 1 World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours. Born in London on 15 February 1929, the moustachioed, ever-charming Hill became one of Britain's most beloved sporting figures and a master of the Monaco Grand Prix, where his five victories earned him the nickname "Mr Monaco."

Hill won the drivers' title in 1962 with BRM and again in 1968 with Lotus, the second coming after the death of team-mate Jim Clark, when his leadership held the grieving team together. Across a long career he amassed 14 wins, 36 podiums, 13 pole positions and 289 points from 177 starts, driving for BRM, Lotus, Brabham and others before founding his own Embassy Hill team. He took the Indianapolis 500 in 1966 and Le Mans in 1972 to complete his unique Triple Crown.

He retired from driving in 1975 to concentrate on running his team, but was killed later that year in an aircraft accident. His record stands alone: no other driver has ever completed the Triple Crown.

Hill was the embodiment of grit and dedication, a driver who reached the top through sheer determination and relentless hard work rather than natural prodigy, mastering the demands of every kind of racing. Charismatic, witty and immensely popular, he was as much an ambassador for the sport as a champion of it, and his singular Triple Crown remains one of the most cherished achievements in all of motor racing.
