Andrea de Cesaris

Andrea de Cesaris was an Italian driver whose Formula 1 career stretched across fifteen seasons, from 1980 to 1994, taking in 209 starts with ten different teams — one of the longest careers of his era measured in both years and employers.

He debuted with Alfa Romeo in 1980 at the age of 21, spent 1981 at McLaren, then returned to Alfa Romeo for two seasons. The 1983 campaign was his statistical peak: fifteen points and eighth place in the drivers' championship, the best classification of his career. He also took a pole position and five podium finishes along the way, though a Grand Prix win never came.

The middle years of his career traced a path through much of the grid — Ligier in 1984 and 1985, Minardi in 1986, Brabham in 1987, Rial in 1988 and Dallara in 1989 and 1990 — with points arriving in most seasons despite frequently modest machinery.

De Cesaris then enjoyed a late-career revival, scoring nine points for Jordan in 1991 and eight for Tyrrell in 1992, finishing ninth in the championship in both years. After a leaner 1993 he returned to Jordan for a final part-season in 1994, retiring from the sport with 59 championship points — and the distinction of more starts without a victory than almost any driver of his generation.
