Jo Bonnier

Jo Bonnier, a Swedish driver born in 1930, competed in the Formula 1 World Championship across sixteen seasons between 1956 and 1971, amassing 106 starts — one of the longer careers of his era. He made his debut with Maserati at the age of twenty-six and went on to drive for a dozen different constructors, including BRM, Porsche, Cooper, Brabham, Lotus and McLaren.

The high point of his career came in 1959, when he took his single Grand Prix victory for BRM — a win that remains the only one of his 106 starts, alongside a solitary pole position and podium. That season also produced his best championship finish of eighth place, with ten points, comfortably his strongest campaign.

Bonnier proved a remarkably consistent points scorer through the late 1950s and 1960s, reaching the championship table in ten of his sixteen seasons despite frequent changes of machinery. Two-year spells with Maserati, BRM, Porsche, Cooper-Climax and then three seasons with Cooper-Maserati brought steady if modest returns, typically three to six points per year under the scoring systems of the day.

His final stretch, from 1969 to 1971, was spent in Lotus and McLaren machinery without adding to his tally, and he closed his career with 39 points from a decade and a half of racing. Few drivers of the period sampled as wide a range of teams and engines as Bonnier did.
