The 1970 Season

1970 produced the most poignant title in Formula 1 history. Jochen Rindt, driving the revolutionary Lotus 72 for Colin Chapman, won five races and built a commanding points lead before he was killed in practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. No remaining contender could overhaul his total, making the Austrian the sport's only posthumous World Champion.

Ferrari's young Jacky Ickx mounted a late charge with several wins but fell short of Rindt's tally. Lotus also took the constructors' crown, while the season underscored both the brilliance and the brutal danger of the era's machinery.
