About Autódromo José Carlos Pace
Located in the Interlagos district on the southern outskirts of São Paulo, this is one of Formula 1's most beloved circuits. Opened in 1940 and originally far longer, it was shortened to its modern configuration in 1990 and is officially named after Brazilian driver José Carlos Pace, who won his home Grand Prix here in 1975. It has hosted the Brazilian Grand Prix, now run as the São Paulo Grand Prix, for the vast majority of years since the early 1970s.
Interlagos holds a special place in Brazilian hearts as the spiritual home of national heroes Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet and Felipe Massa. Senna's emotional, physically draining 1991 victory at his home track, nursing a car stuck in sixth gear to the finish, is one of the most cherished images in the country's sporting history.
Often slotted near the end of the season, the circuit has a habit of staging championship-deciding drama, its passionate crowds and unpredictable weather repeatedly producing some of the sport's greatest finales.
Memorable Moments
- 1991: Ayrton Senna won his home Grand Prix for the first time, wrestling a gearbox stuck in sixth gear over the closing laps and collapsing with exhaustion in the cockpit afterward.
- 2008: Felipe Massa won the race and appeared to be champion, only for Lewis Hamilton to pass Timo Glock at the very last corner of the season to take the title by a single point.
- 2012: Sebastian Vettel survived a first-lap spin and damage in a chaotic wet race to recover the points he needed and clinch his third consecutive world championship.
- 2021: Lewis Hamilton charged from the back of the field after a grid penalty to win one of the standout drives of his career, a pivotal result in his title fight with Max Verstappen.
Track Character
Interlagos runs anticlockwise and is short, undulating and old-school, packed onto a hilly site that gives it constant elevation change. The lap plunges downhill into the demanding Senna S complex, sweeps through the long, banked Curva do Sol and winds through a technical, bumpy infield before the long climb up the hill and onto the main straight. That uphill run, feeding into the heavy braking of the Senna S, provides excellent, repeated overtaking and makes for thrilling, close racing. Its mix of high speed, tricky cambers, frequent rain and a fervent home crowd makes it one of the most atmospheric and action-packed venues on the calendar.
