About Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps
Set deep in the forested hills of the Ardennes in eastern Belgium, Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most revered circuits in motorsport. Originally laid out in the 1920s over public roads linking the villages of Francorchamps, Malmedy and Stavelot, the early Spa was a terrifyingly fast and dangerous circuit of nearly 14 kilometres. The modern, shortened layout used since 1983 still measures around 7 km, by far the longest lap on the current F1 calendar.
Spa has hosted the Belgian Grand Prix for the vast majority of F1's history and is consistently named the favourite circuit of drivers past and present. Its combination of elevation change, high-speed corners and the sheer scale of the track creates a sense of grandeur that few venues can match.
The circuit's location in the hills also makes its weather famously unpredictable: it can be dry on one part of the lap and pouring with rain on another, a quirk that has produced some of the most chaotic and dramatic races in the sport's history.
Memorable Moments
- 1992: Michael Schumacher took the first of his record-breaking 91 Grand Prix victories at Spa, the circuit where he had made his F1 debut just a year earlier.
- 1998: A first-lap pile-up in heavy rain wiped out a huge chunk of the field, forcing a restart; the race eventually fell to Damon Hill and Jordan for the team's maiden win.
- 2000: Mika Häkkinen executed one of F1's most celebrated overtakes, slicing past Schumacher around the outside at Les Combes while both lapped a backmarker.
- 2021: Persistent rain meant the race was declared after only a couple of laps behind the safety car, with Max Verstappen awarded a half-points win in one of the shortest Grands Prix ever.
Track Character
Spa is defined by Eau Rouge and the Raidillon, the breathtaking uphill left-right-left that compresses the car and is taken flat-out by modern machinery, demanding total commitment from the driver. From there the long Kemmel Straight provides one of the calendar's best overtaking opportunities, leading into the technical Les Combes complex. The lap mixes these high-speed challenges with slower corners like the Bus Stop chicane and the sweeping Pouhon, requiring a compromise on downforce between straight-line speed and cornering grip. With its huge elevation changes, forest backdrop and ever-changing weather, Spa offers a uniquely complete test of car and driver.
